Finding hope, humor, and new beginnings on the road to retirement

There’s something funny about the day before the lottery drawing. It’s the best part, really. You still have that tiny spark of “what if” floating around. You can imagine what you’d do with the money — the beach house, helping your family, or maybe just never having to set another alarm again. It’s not even about winning; it’s about that sweet little space where anything still feels possible.

At work, my colleagues and I always joke, “I won’t show up tomorrow — I’ll transfer the money to you guys as we agreed to share!” We’ve said it so many times it’s almost part of our routine. We laugh, knowing the odds are ridiculous, but it gives us a moment to dream together — like a mini escape from whatever chaos the day throws at us.

The older I get, the more I realize that hope is kind of like that. It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s just there, quietly reminding you that something good might still be around the corner. Life throws all kinds of surprises — some good, some not so much — but hope keeps you moving. It’s what helps you show up again the next morning, do your best, and still find something to smile about.

Now that I’m closer to retirement, I see another kind of “day before the drawing.” It’s that stage where you’re not quite free yet, but you can see it coming. You start wondering what life will feel like when there’s no clock-in, no rush, and no Monday emails. It’s exciting… and a little scary. But mostly, it’s that same kind of hope before retirement — the belief that a new chapter might be waiting, one that’s slower, lighter, and maybe a little more you.

If you enjoy this kind of reflection, you might like my post, A Realistic Positive Mindset After 50: How to Stay Grounded and Hopeful. It’s all about finding that middle ground — where optimism feels real, not forced, and hope still fits comfortably into everyday life.

I think that’s the real win — not the jackpot, but the feeling that tomorrow could still surprise you. We all need that, especially when life feels heavy or routines start to wear us down. This kind of pre-retirement mindset reminds me that the future doesn’t have to be perfect to be hopeful. Hope doesn’t promise we’ll win big, but it keeps the story open. It keeps us curious, kind, and willing to try again.

That’s why I believe in finding hope in everyday life, even on the days that feel ordinary. It might be a laugh with coworkers, a small victory at work, or a quiet cup of coffee where the world slows down just long enough to breathe. These are the moments that keep our dreams alive long before the “jackpot” shows up.

So here’s to the day before the drawing — the laughter, the silly dreams, and the quiet belief that something good might still happen. Whether it’s the lottery or the next chapter of life, hope before retirement is the best ticket we’ve got.

And if I do win, don’t worry — I’ll send your share. 😉
