Navigating the Complex Roadblocks to Secure a Stable Future

How Gen Xers Can Overcome Hidden Obstacles in Retirement Planning

Because I am a Gen Xer who is approaching retirement and has been working hard all my life, let’s talk about our generation. Gen X, the generation often caught between the Baby Boomers and Millennials, was born between approximately 1965 and 1980. We witnessed a world in rapid transformation. We have lived through times of significant changes. We’ve faced economic challenges, technological revolutions, and shifting social norms. We are also part of the “sandwich generation,” caring for aging parents and adult children.

Fresh out of college in 1994, I started my career with a modest income. As part of a family with three children pursuing higher education, one after the other, I felt a strong responsibility to help alleviate the financial burden on my parents. Those early years were a crash course in financial reality. With limited resources, I learned firsthand the importance of careful planning. It’s a lesson that’s stayed with me, shaping my understanding of life’s unpredictability and the need to prepare for whatever comes your way.

While we’ve shown resilience and adaptability, a new challenge looms on the horizon: retirement. As the oldest Gen Xers approach their early 60s, the reality of retirement is becoming increasingly clear. Unfortunately, many of us are finding ourselves unprepared.

A significant portion of Gen Xers are facing a retirement savings gap. Unlike previous generations who often relied on pensions, many have primarily relied on 401(k) plans. This places the burden of retirement planning squarely on our shoulders. A Natixis study found [1] that almost half of Gen Xers believe they will need a “miracle” to retire comfortably.

Gen Xers are facing a retirement savings crisis. A recent survey [3] found that a larger percentage of Gen Xers (69%) feel behind on retirement savings compared to other generations: Baby Boomers (60%), Millennials (49%), and Gen Z (42%)

Housing costs, student loan debt, and caregiving responsibilities have contributed to this financial strain. Additionally, economic downturns and market volatility have impacted our retirement savings.

Despite these challenges, Gen Xers are determined to find solutions. Many consider delayed retirement, part-time work, or downsizing to maintain their desired lifestyle. It’s a time for careful planning and potentially difficult decisions. Dive into our retirement checklist to learn more about retirement planning.
